It can’t hurt to be able to navigate to a distress position in an easier fashion. Although, I am wondering how much that feature will be really be useful to me. I wanted the NK2 so that the DSC and / or the AIS receiver in the VHF can display incoming positions on the Garmin CC relative to my position. The GPS portion would be a redundant backup.

I do realize that I don’t need to use the CC/FF or have a NK2 backbone to send a position via the DSC system with a GPS enabled VHF.

Good information and reinforcement about avoiding switched GPS and VHF. This is why I would never put a GPS equipped VHF radio on a switch. It doesn't need the CP/FF or N2K to do that. May 29, 2020A VHF with internal GPS is self contained and will transmit both your MMSI and Lat/Lon information if the Distress button is engaged. Does anyone know if this draws enough power to drain the battery if the dual battery switch is not turned off for several days? It only goes off completely when the dual battery is of course turned off. The factory installed stereo radio has an indicator light on it that stays on even if the the radio is turned off. I assume the powered NK2 backbone will not provide power to the Garmin or the VHF and they must be powered separately as well.Īnother somewhat related question. I am not sure what is the “normal” way to do this. The only other choice would be to power the VHF separately as before and just attach the NK2 to the ACC switch by itself, but again, would need to remember to flip it on to get the Backbone to work. I would have to then make sure that ACC switch is on in order for the VHF and the NK2 to work. Does that sound practical? The other option is to run both the VHF and the NMEA off the same remaining ACC switch. The reason I mention that is because I could do the same thing with the console mounted VHF and the NMEA 2000 and let the Dual battery switch be the switch for the NMEA 2000 if appropriate. Both units power up only when the power switches on the units themselves are turned on. However, they are wired to two different dash fuse/rocker switch contacts in such a way to just provide power and not switched. Neither of the factory installed Garmin or stereo radio are tied to a switch of any kind. I mention this as it would also factor in where I am going to power the VHF from. I am 5’8” and a flush mount would be easier to read and access. I have not decided as of yet if I am going to mount the radio in the e-box or flush mount it in the console.

I have one free Accessory Switch on the dash that could be used if need be, but I am not sure if it is practical to have it wired to a dependent switch like that. How do most of you wire the NMEA power? Do you rely on the dual battery switch to be turned to the Off position when the boat is not in use or do you wire it to another switch.

If you do not have an auxiliary power switch, or if connecting to the auxiliary power switch causes electrical interference, connect the NMEA 2000 power cable directly to the battery and install an in-line switch.ĬautioN: If you connect the NMEA 2000 network to your battery without an in-line switch, it may drain your battery.“ Use a NMEA 2000 power cable to connect your NMEA 2000 backbone to the auxiliary power switch on your boat. Here is the quote” Power Connection and Distribution The general installation guidelines for the Garmin unit says to wire it to a switch to avoid draining the battery. My question involves the correct way to wire the power supply to the NMEA 2000 backbone. I have already reviewed the construction of a NMEA 2000 backbone and have ordered the Garmin NMEA 200 start up kit. I intend to connect the Garmin unit and the VHF via a NMEA 2000 network ( I know the GPS In the VHF is redundant and won’t be the source of position data ). It has a built in GPS and AIS receiver and is NMEA 2000 compliant.

I am awaiting a back order on a Standard Horizon GX2400. I have been relying on a handheld VHS, but want to install a fixed mount VHS unit. It has the factory installed Garmin gps map 1042.
